Stella McCartney was awarded an honorary LLD, a Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Dundee at Sadler's Wells in Islington, North London in recognition "for her services to design and to honor her innovative design [and for serving as ] an inspiration to students." Upon receiving the honor from university chancellor Sir James Black during a ceremony at the Estorick Gallery in London, Stella said:"I am very very proud. I wouldn't have thought it. This is the sort of thing you don't imagine when you are a kid in college. It's a massive honor to be an inspiration to anyone. After the ceremony, Stella met with some Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design students. Stella, dressed for the event in a tailored black trouser suit and white shirt, was given a preview of the student's work. Afterward, Stella said:
"It was wonderful looking at their work. I am looking forward to seeing more."And the students were impressed with meeting Stella. One student, Tissany Boz stated:
"The speech was very inspirational and less nerve-racking than I thought it would be. She said that design was something that used to be a scary thing for people to tell their parents they wanted to do but there are so many more options in design now. It's more likely that you can make a living out of it."Student Hillary Brown was given the opportunity to show Stella some of her constructive textile work. What did Stella think of it? According to Hillary:
"She said they were lovely and we were chatting about her graduation. She said I should keep going with the textiles and that I was at the beginning of a very long and successful career. She was very down to earth and very positive about the whole experience."
