Billboard reports that for the first time in nine years, there's a Lennon/McCartney tune on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The Across the Universe single, recorded live at the Grammy awards ceremony, is number 22 on the chart, making it the highest chart debut tune of 2005. Among the recording stars featured on the single are Bono, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, Tim McGraw, Aerosmith's Steve Tyler, Brian Wilson, and Alison Krauss. All proceeds from the sale of the song will go towards UNICEF's efforts to aid tsunami disaster victims in south east Asia. Across the Universeis now available for download exclusively at the iTunes Music Store for $0.99.
With Across the Universe on the Billboard Hot 100, the chart span of Lennon/McCartney tunes spans 41 years, eight months and one week. Their first appearance was with Del Shannon's cover of From Me to You that appeared on the chart on June 29, 1963. It is the first Lennon/McCartney song to appear on the Hot 100 since the Beatles' Real Love peaked at number 11 in March, 1996. Although Across the Universe was never released as a Beatles' single, it has been used before to raise funds for charitable purposes. In 1969, the Beatles contributed their rendition on Nothing's Gonna Change Our World, a benefit album for the World Wildlife Fund. The following year, Phil Spector's production appeared on the Beatles' Let It Be album.
