(Updated November 13) On Sunday, Sir Paul will become the first artist to broadcast a live concert into outer space. NASA Astronaut Bill McArthur and Russian Cosmonaut Valery Tokarev, the crew of the international Space Station, will receive a live wakeup call from Sir Paul. This is the first time a live concert will be linked to a U.S. spacecraft. The astronauts will be awakend to the sound of Sir Paul singing Good Day Sunshine and English Tea. The performance will take place at at 12:55 a.m. EST on Sunday, Nov. 13 at the end of Sir Paul's Anaheim, California concert at Arrowhead Pond. It will be broadcast live on NASA TV http://www.nasa.gov/ntv . It is expected that video and audio of both Sir Paul and Astronaut McArthur and Cosmonaut Tokarev will be able to be viewed from both locations.
On August 9th of this year, a recording of the Beatles' Good Day Sunshine was played as a wakeup call for the crew of Space Shuttle Discovery's STS-114 mission. It relayed the message that the weather forecast was favorable for their landing later that morning. Sir Paul recalls:
"I was extremely proud to find out that one of my songs was played for the crew of Discovery this summer. We’re very proud to say that on the morning that NASA told them they were clear to come home to the Earth they played that song. In our concert we hope to repay the favor. We send our love from Earth."Space Shuttle Discovery's commander, astronaut Eileen Collins added:
"Since people were first awakened on the moon by mission control, wakeup songs have been a space tradition to brighten the crew's day and get them off to a great start. We're honored that Paul McCartney will be a part of this historic delivery of music for Bill and Valery. It will surely give them a big boost as they continue through their research mission."
