On Monday, January 30, Sir Paul will be in Liverpool to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts with a gala performance featuring 250 students and some of their celebrity patrons. Although he has not indicated that he will perform at the event, he has expressed his pride in the school:
"The dream we had to save my old school, the Liverpool Institute, and turn it into something really worthwhile has happened. We've already had great success stories, with graduates getting their own TV shows on MTV, winning lead roles on the West End stage and going out into the world making films, working in theater and creating some very cool music. I'm hoping that LIPA will play its part in the continuation of Liverpool's rich culture in the coming years."
It has been seventeen years since Sir Paul announced his intention to renovate and reopen the Liverpool Institute School where both he and George Harrison had been students. He had the vision and the determination to see his dream take shape in reality. Sir Paul contributed more that 3 million pounds of his own money to restore the old building. He recruited friends and acquaintances like Queen Elizabeth, Eddie Murphy, Jane Fonda, Ralph Lauren and David Hockney to support the project. He also had the support of LIPA's principal, Mark Featherstone-Witty, who shared Sir Paul's aims and aspirations for the school. Mr.Featherstone-Witty told Liverpool's Daily Post:
"We could not have done this without Paul. His backing helped get everyone else onboard. But also it helped when it came to recruiting students. When you have a new institute with no alumni and no track record, then the support from Paul was vital."
