Today's Daily Variety has more to report on the new Cirque du Soleil Beatles album (see April 10). Variety reports that Sir George Martin and his son Giles have spent that last two years working on the album in the Abbey Road Studios. The project is also being overseen by Sir Paul and Ringo Starr. They have stated that they will not be appearing on stage in Las Vegas with the Cirque du Soleil.
The project, which Neil Aspinall describes as "a huge investment", opened the entire Beatles' catalog to the Martins for use in the production. Giles Martin has released a statement that reads:
"Our mission was to try and achieve the same intimacy we get when listening to the master tapes at Abbey Road. I think we will achieve a real sense of drama with the music; the audience will feel as though they are actually in the room with the band."
Sir George Martin added:
"After spending 40 years of my life working with the Beatles, I am thrilled to be involved in what I imagine will be a unique and magical experience."
Sir George does not want the production to turn into a nostalgic piece. Rather, he is striving to create a production that reflects the Beatles uniqueness as a rock phenomenon. The album will be released on Apple Records. Apple expects to be able to announce the release date soon. The Cirque du Soleil production will be the first authorized theatrical show of the Beatles' works.
