2006-Jun-07: Sir Paul Visits LIPA

Sir Paul McCartney paid a visit to his Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts to celebrated the success of Sandi Thom. The 24-year-old Scottish-born singer Sandi, a 2003 LIPA graduate, is the first alum to reach the top of the charts with her self-penned song I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair). Sir Paul said:

"I'm dead chuffed that we've helped Sandi to achieve her dream."

LIPA principal, Mark Featherstone-Witty added:

"This is fantastic news. Aside from Sandi's achievement, the timing for us is amazing - during our tenth year of existence we have a graduate at the
top of the charts."

Sandi praised the advice she received from Sir Paul while she was a LIPA student:

"At the time I was in a band with seven members, and Sir Paul's advice was to keep it simple. I was chuffed with what he said. When I was at LIPA I learned a lot, and I have a lot to thank him for."

Will success change her life?

"I'm still doing what I've always done. I just want to play songs and see the world."

After the event, Mr. Featherstone-Witty expressed concern for his friend's health:

"It is the lowest I have seen him since Linda died. They are totally different circumstances, but he looked extremely tired and worn out by the whole situation. He is going through a bad patch. He is still speaking to Heather, they have a child together and have to work that out."
