Sir Paul continues to be locked in a planning dispute with his local council after building a log cabin on his land without permission. Officials at Rother District Council have refused retrospective planning permission and are threatening enforcement action. The council's planning officers insist the two-bedroom lodge harms the landscape quality of the High Weald area of outstanding natural beauty.
Sir Paul has now offered to demolish one of his houses on his sprawling country estate at Woodlands Farm, near Rye in East Sussex. Along with offering to demolish the three-bedroom detached house (known known as Beanacres) Sir Paul has also offered to tear down two agricultural barns in an effort to keep his log cabin. Sir Paul claims he needs the lodge for "privacy, seclusion and security".
The council's head of planning, Frank Ralling, says:
"We are in the process of looking at the offer, and we will be taking legal advice. It's our responsibility to protect rural policy, and we will be preparing a report on this latest offer in due course. We hope to deal with it in September. In the event that the new application is granted then no further action will be taken in regard to the enforcement authorization. Conversely, if the application is refused then action will be taken in issuing the enforcement notice and this will allow the landowner to appeal both the planning refusal and the enforcement notice."
