Sir Paul has joined the campaign to prevent service cuts at the local hospital near his country estate in Sussex. Sir Paul released a statement that read:
"Any cutback in medical services for this and any other region is a real shame. These are services for the people of the area and I for one support the efforts of the people who are trying to make sure that these closures don't happen."
The Conquest Hospital in St. Leonards On Sea, East Sussex is a place close to Sir Paul's heart. In 1990 Sir Paul took to the streets of Rye to lead a huge protest march in a bid to prevent the closure of the town's hospital. In May of 1995, his son James was airlifted and treated there after fracturing his ankle when he overturned a Land Rover while driving across the McCartney estate in Peasmarsh, East Sussex. Sir Paul also donated a substantial amount of money to establish the McCartney Unit for cancer treatment at the hospital.
Friends of the Conquest Hospital secretary Margaret Williams said Sir Paul's endorsement of their efforts has lifted spirits.
"Having an endorsement from someone like Sir Paul really lifts the profile of the campaign. We are desperately worried about what will happen to A&E (Accident and Emergency department) and maternity, and anything that anybody can do to help can only be a good thing."
