Sir Paul's company, MPL Communications, has filed the necessary documents with the trademarks registry in London to begin the process of trademarking the McCartney name. Within three months, if there are no objections, a judge will decide whether the Sir Paul's request meets all the legal criteria to be registered. After that, Sir Paul will have the exclusive right to use the McCartney name on a variety of goods. According to his spokesman:
"It would give him protection against his name being used on products he does not approve of."
Since a trademark prevents others from using identical, or similar, names and logos, it is assumed that care is being taken so that Stella McCartney may continue to use the family name on the fashion items she designs.
