2006-Nov-27: Stella Furious over Record Fur Sales

Stella McCartney is furious at her fellow designers for continuing to use animal fur in new designs. Sales of fur products have risen 30% in the last year recently reaching a record $965 million. Stella is angry that fashion designers Jean-Paul Gaultier, Julien MacDonald and Alexander McQueen are continuing to use real fur in their collections. According to Stella:

"There's nothing fashionable about a dead animal that has been cruelly killed just because some people think it looks cool to wear. The continuing use of fur is a real problem in the fashion industry. There is an issue with people out there assuming that fur trim is fake when most of it is real."

This year, Stella launched a line of accessories that fuse man-made and natural materials with high quality construction. In a recent interview, Stella stated:

“It’s surprising to me that people cannot get their heads around a non-leather bag or shoe. They already exist out there, but unfortunately designers feel they have to slap a leather trim or sole on them. People need to start looking at the product, and if they like it, that’s all that matters. If it has an ethical or ecological edge, that’s a huge bonus. We address these questions in every other part of our lives except fashion. Mindsets are changing, though, which is encouraging.”
