On January 9, the Royal Mail will issue a set of six postage stamps honoring the Beatles. Up until last year, the only living people who could be featured on British stamps were the members of the Royal Family. According to the Royal Mail, the stamps "celebrate the Beatles' extraordinary cultural contribution to Britain." The irregularly shaped stamps will feature the group's album covers including With the Beatles, Help!, Revolver, Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Abbey Road, and Let It Be.
According to a spokesman for the Royal Mail:
"The Beatles special stamps promise to be a big hit with fans the world over when they go on sale in January 2007. Royal Mail is featuring some '1st Class' Beatles album covers to commemorate the UK band that stands for all thats great in popular culture."
Up until last year, only members of the Royal Family could be the only living people featured on British stamps. The stamps can be purchased online at http://www.royalmail.com
